Welcome to Ashtabula and Woodburn Historic Houses in Pendleton, SC...

The Pendleton Historic Foundation was founded in 1960 to save the historic house at Woodburn at a time when its future was in peril. While funds were being raised to restore Woodburn, Mead Paper Company donated Ashtabula and 10 acres to the Foundation to protect it from an uncertain future as well. The Foundation now ownes and operates two of the largest Upcountry plantation houses as house museums for the enjoyment and education of visitors of all ages.

Mission Statement:  The Pendleton Historic Foundation is an IRS 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit educatinal organization dedicated to the restoration and preservation of historic properties in Pendleton and the interpretation of the diverse history and cultural heritage of the area.

Programs:
  • Restoration, preservation and exhibition of Woodburn (c1830) and Ashtabula (c.1825) historic houses
  • Educational programs in American and SC history for visitors of all ages
  • Historic preservation education and assistance to the community

Preservation:& Exhibition:  Both houses were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Asthabula and Woodburn have been operated as house museums since the mid-1970's and are sites on the SC National Heritage Corridor.  These historic houses welcomed approximately 7,000 visitors in 2007.

Educational Programs:  A major focus is providing insightfull programs for school groups along with hands-on demonstrations.  Each year, the Foundation sponsors a number of educational programs at each house including two historic reenactments as well as living history tours.   The Foundation hosts 15-25 special school tours each year.

Historic Pendleton: This is a new subsidiary made up of local homeowners of houses over 50 years. This organization provides preservation education and support through a historic house regristry, speakers program and bi-monthly meetings.

Fundraising:  The Foundation hosts an annual fundraising gala at Woodburn benefiting the Foundation's Preservation Endowment. When fully funded, this endowment will provide operating funds for annual maintenance and further preservation projects.

The grounds of both houses are available for rental from April - October for weddings, receptions, and parties. See our web page "Weddings to Remember" for rates and further details.

"Banking the Fire thus to Guard the Flame"

From the poem " Pendleton:  Profit and Loss" by Robert Adger Bowen refering to the nightly practice in bygone days of covering coals in the fireplace with ashes in order to preserve them until next morning.  This line crystalizes the meaning and purpose of the Pendleton Historic Foundation.
